End-of-Life Planning Tool

I had the pleasure of partnering with the innovative minds at Cake, the world’s largest end-of-life planning platform aiming to make something scary feel approachable, normal, and accessible. They provide their customers with a centralized hub to manage and learn about end-of-life plans and receive guidance for managing the death of loved ones. We began with a brand and website refresh, and as our partnership grew we took on the larger initiative of creating a proprietary online will tool.

Empowering people to make an informed plan

Aside from designing an intuitive interface, the main task at hand was breaking down an intimidating subject into easy steps and human language. While building the experience for Cake’s online will tool, I identified opportunities where additional context and descriptors could help users feel more at ease to make informed decisions.

Though wills can (and should!) be created at any stage of life, I also took into account the older user base when making choices about UX patterns and information hierarchy. I took inspiration from products like Turbo Tax, that break down legal jargon in plain terms, and use progress indicators and language cues to make it clear where you are in the process.

Cake was founded with the vision that other life milestones - like having babies or getting married - had online tools to make the process easier. This just wasn’t true for the end-of-life category.
— Suelin Chen, Founder

It’s not every day you get to use calming colors and cheerful illustrations for a product that has, well – somewhat of a morbid subject matter. But with Cake, that was exactly the goal. End-of-life planning should be done with love, and is a necessary stage all humans will encounter. And by demystifying that, the industry is disrupted.

Since its launch, over 100 million people have used Cake’s vast collection of resources and tools.* They were acquired by Foundation Partners Group in 2024.
